Lensmeter

A lensmeter (also called a lensometer or vertometer) is an optical tool used by eye doctors and opticians to measure the power and correctness of eyeglass and contact lenses.

What a Lensmeter Measures

Sphere power: Corrects nearsightedness or farsightedness.

Cylinder power and axis: Corrects astigmatism.

Addition (Add) power: Provides the extra magnification needed for bifocals or reading glasses.

Prism: Measures image shifting used to treat eye-alignment issues.

Types of Lensmeters

Manual lensmeters: Use an illuminated target and focusing dials. You look through an eyepiece and line up crosshairs or dots to read the exact prescription.

Automated lensmeters: Use digital sensors and screens to scan the lens. They display the final numbers instantly and work fast for busy clinics. Brands like Topcon Healthcare and ZEISS make popular digital models.
