A rotary microtome is a device used to cut tissue samples—embedded in paraffin or other solid media—into continuous, thin sections. Primarily used for paraffin sectioning, it is also commonly referred to as a paraffin microtome. The instrument consists mainly of a control system, mechanical system, drive system, blade holder, blade, and housing. Widely used in hospital pathology departments, research institutes, teaching laboratories, technical workshops, biopharmaceutical companies, and materials analysis laboratories, it serves as fundamental equipment for pathological diagnosis and biological research.

Key Features
A compact, independent control panel effectively manages all critical operations.
The built-in control panel and the independent control panel are fully synchronized; the LCD screen displays total section thickness, total section count, trimming thickness, and sectioning thickness, while also indicating key operational statuses.
Two vertical specimen stop positions (upper and lower).
Five sectioning modes: single, continuous, step, half-stroke, and programmed.
Sectioning speed automatically adjusts based on section thickness.
The trimming function can be toggled on or off. In automatic mode, trimming parameters adjust automatically; in manual mode, parameters can be programmed by the user.
Sectioning thickness and trimming thickness can be selected and stored independently.
Visual and audible signals indicate the forward/backward limits of the specimen feed and the remaining feed distance.
Optional accessories include a cold light source, magnifying glass, or stereo microscope to facilitate semi-thin sectioning; an optional ultra-low-temperature liquid nitrogen freezing system allows for semi-thin sectioning of specialized samples.
The E-type blade holder features a red safety guard covering the entire length of the blade edge, ensuring user safety during sectioning and block replacement.
A storage tray can be placed on top of or beside the microtome for easy access to frequently used tools; the top of the unit can also accommodate a cooling block for chilling paraffin blocks.

Development Trends

Product technology is evolving toward deep integration with intelligent systems and digital pathology. Next-generation microtomes will interconnect with specimen tracking systems, scanners, and Laboratory Information Systems (LIS) to enable automatic section thickness calibration, section quality monitoring, and data logging. The use of disposable blades, eco-friendly lubrication, and safety protection mechanisms will help minimize operational risks and cross-contamination. High-end models incorporate preset programs as well as remote diagnostic and maintenance functions to enhance laboratory operational efficiency. The integration of research-grade microtomes with high-resolution microscopy (HREM) enables precise section alignment, ultimately improving the quality of 3D reconstructions.
