Application of CPAP Machine

CPAP (Continuous Positive Airway Pressure) is a medical device that delivers a continuous, constant airflow into the airway via a mask. It is primarily used in medicine and daily life to treat obstructive sleep apnea (OSA), eliminate severe snoring, and assist breathing in infants with underdeveloped lungs in neonatal intensive care.

1. Medical Applications

First-line treatment for obstructive sleep apnea (OSA): OSA patients experience airway collapse and recurrent apnea during sleep due to relaxation of the throat muscles. CPAP acts as a "pneumatic splint" by providing gentle positive pressure gas to open and maintain an open upper airway.

Cardiovascular and complication prevention: Severe sleep apnea can cause a sudden drop in blood oxygen levels, inducing hypertension, arrhythmias, and stroke. Long-term, standardized use of CPAP can effectively reduce the risk of these cardiovascular complications.

Neonatal respiratory support: In pediatrics and the neonatal intensive care unit (NICU), CPAP is commonly used in premature infants to help maintain the expansion of underdeveloped lungs and prevent respiratory distress syndrome.

2. Applications in Daily Life

Improving Sleep Quality and Eliminating Snoring: Wearing a CPAP machine during sleep can instantly eliminate severe snoring caused by airway narrowing. Patients no longer frequently wake up gasping for air or toss and turn due to oxygen deprivation at night, thus eliminating daytime sleepiness, dizziness, and fatigue.

Long-Term Home Management: Modern CPAP devices are lightweight and extremely quiet, allowing patients to use them at home at night. The device is usually equipped with a humidifier to reduce discomfort such as nasal dryness.

Adaptation and Daily Maintenance: An adaptation period of a few weeks is required for initial use to overcome the slight foreign body sensation caused by the mask. The mask and tubing need to be replaced regularly, and the water tank cleaned to ensure hygiene.
