Application of Suction Devices

In medicine, suction devices are primarily used to clear airway secretions (sputum), vomit, or aspirated material to relieve airway obstruction. They play an irreplaceable life-support role in maintaining airway patency, improving lung ventilation, and preventing complications such as pulmonary infection and asphyxia in critically ill patients, postoperative patients, and the elderly.

1. Core Clinical Application Scenarios

* Airway Management and Artificial Airway Care: For mechanically ventilated patients using endotracheal intubation or tracheotomy, suction devices are crucial for maintaining ventilator patency and ensuring gas exchange efficiency.

* Emergency and Resuscitation: In emergency situations, they are used to quickly clear foreign objects, blood, and vomit from the airways of drowning, traumatic, or comatose patients to prevent asphyxiation.

* Perioperative Care: After major surgeries such as cardiothoracic surgery and neurosurgery, patients often lack the ability to cough up sputum due to a weakened cough reflex. Suction devices can prevent atelectasis and postoperative pulmonary infection.

* Chronic Diseases and Daily Care: For elderly patients with severe lung disease, amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), or those who are bedridden for extended periods, airway cleaning can be performed at home or in facilities using a suction device.

2. Main Operating Methods

Open Suctioning: Disconnect the ventilator circuit and insert a sterile suction catheter directly into the patient's airway to suction sputum.

Closed Suctioning: Performed without weaning from the ventilator using a specially designed closed suction catheter, effectively reducing oxygen depletion and the risk of ventilator-associated pneumonia (VAP) during suctioning.

Fiberoptic Bronchoscopy Combined with Suctioning: Using a fiberoptic bronchoscope to penetrate deep into the lung segments to treat deep, viscous sputum or severely infected lesions in the lungs.
