EMG

Electromyography (EMG) is a safe, common test that checks muscle and nerve health. It helps doctors find the causes of weakness, numbness, or pain. For children and older patients, a few simple preparations can make the exam smoother, more comfortable, and less stressful. Here’s what you need to know.

Before the Exam

First, tell your doctor about all medicines your family member takes, especially blood thinners or supplements. On the day of the test, avoid using lotions, oils, or creams on the arms and legs—these can affect the test results.

For children, keep them calm and well-rested. Bring a favorite toy, blanket, or snack to help them relax. Explain the test in simple, gentle words to reduce fear.

For older patients, make sure they have eaten a light meal and are not overly tired. If they have trouble walking or moving, arrange for help to and from the clinic.

During the Exam

EMG uses small, thin electrodes and tiny needles—most patients feel only mild discomfort. Children may need a parent to hold their hand or stay nearby for comfort. The technician will move slowly and gently.

Older patients should let the team know if they feel dizzy, sore, or tired at any time. Take slow, deep breaths to stay relaxed. The exam usually takes 30 to 60 minutes.

After the Exam

Mild soreness in the tested areas is normal and will go away quickly. Children can return to normal activities right away. Older patients should rest for a short time before leaving.

If you notice redness, swelling, or severe pain, call your doctor. Most patients have no serious side effects.

Final Reminders

EMG is safe and helpful for both children and seniors. The key is good preparation, staying calm, and communicating with your medical team. Following these small tips will make the experience easy and stress-free for your loved ones.
