How to Select Surgical Lights for Different Hospital Departments?

The key to selecting surgical lights for different departments lies in accurately matching "lighting parameters" with the "clinical scenario." While most LED surgical lights can meet basic surgical needs, different departments have significantly different requirements for light quality and lamp structure. We will explain this from two dimensions: core parameters and departmental suitability, and provide specific recommendations on appropriate levels.

***The lighting requirements of different departments are mainly reflected in the following core parameters:

***Departmental Lighting Recommendations
Based on the above parameters, the focus for different departments is as follows:

Neurosurgery/Spinal Surgery: These surgeries have deep and narrow surgical fields, requiring extremely high precision in illumination depth and spot size. Models with an illumination depth ≥1500mm and finely adjustable spot size should be prioritized to ensure clear visibility of deep tissues. Simultaneously, a high color rendering index (Ra≥99) is crucial for distinguishing nerves and blood vessels.

General Surgery/Thoracic Surgery: These surgeries have a larger field of view, requiring a large and uniform spot size. Dual-head surgical lights are ideal, with one light providing main illumination and the other providing side supplemental lighting to effectively reduce shadows. High-end models with an illuminance of 160,000 Lux fully meet the requirements.

Orthopedic/Vascular Surgery: Extremely high requirements for tissue color reproduction. Focus should be placed on the color rendering index (CRI), choosing products with Ra ≥ 97 or even R9 (red reproduction index) ≥ 97 to accurately distinguish subtle blood vessels and tissue layers.

ICU/Emergency Department/Small Debridement Room: These scenarios require flexible and easily portable lighting equipment. Portable surgical lights or wall-mounted surgical lights are good choices. These devices have slightly lower maximum illuminance requirements than operating rooms, but still require high color rendering index (Ra≥95) and a smaller size for bedside procedures such as punctures and debridement.

***Product Tier and Configuration Recommendations

For specific product selection, the following recommendations can be made:

**Basic Entry-Level (ICU/Emergency):** Suitable for bedside operations. Illuminance standards can be relaxed to ≥35,000 Lux, but the color rendering index should still be ≥97 to ensure operational safety. Configuration is relatively simple, mostly single-arm or mobile.

**Mainstream Standard Level (Used in Most Operating Rooms): Meets the requirements of the vast majority of surgeries. Illuminance needs to reach a peak level of 160,000 Lux, color rendering index ≥95, and features adjustable color temperature and spot size adjustment.

**High-End Specialty Level (Preferred for Neurosurgery/Plastic Surgery):** Parameters are even better than the standard level. For example, the color rendering index (CRI) must be ≥99, and R9 ≥97; the illumination depth must reach 1500mm or more; the lamp arm joints must be more flexible, allowing for unlimited rotation to meet the lighting needs of complex body positions.
