Why do X-ray machines need voltage regulators?

X-ray machines need voltage regulators (Voltage Stabilizer/Voltage Regulator) primarily to ensure stable input voltage, thereby ensuring stable X-ray output, protecting the high-voltage generator, and extending the equipment's lifespan.

X-ray machines are quite sensitive to power quality, especially high-frequency high-voltage generators and high-power X-ray tube systems.

1. Ensuring accurate X-ray exposure parameters (the most important reason)

An X-ray machine requires:

kV (tube voltage)

mA (tube current)

ms (exposure time) to generate X-rays

The tube voltage (kV) directly affects:

X-ray energy

Penetration power

Image brightness

If the input voltage fluctuates:

For example, mains voltage:

220V → 190V → 240V

The high-voltage generator output may be affected:

The set voltage of 120kV may actually be lower

Unstable exposure dose

Changes in image quality

Manifestations:

Different image brightness for the same patient with the same imaging parameters

Repeated imaging required

Increased patient radiation dose

2. Protecting the high-voltage generator

Core components of an X-ray machine:

Main power

↓ Voltage regulator

↓ High-voltage generator

↓ X-ray tube
↓ X-ray

The high-voltage generator contains:
IGBT module
High-voltage transformer
Control circuit
Rectifier module

Voltage abnormalities may cause:
Low voltage:
Insufficient high-voltage output
Increased IGBT load
Equipment alarm
Overvoltage:
Risk of component breakdown
Power module damage

3. Protecting the X-ray Tube

The X-ray tube is the most expensive consumable component of an X-ray machine.

Unstable voltage may cause:
Abnormal anode startup

Especially for high-speed rotating anode tubes:

For example:
8500 rpm
10000 rpm
A relatively stable power supply is required for startup.

If startup fails:
The anode does not reach the rated speed
The target surface is damaged during exposure

4. Meeting High-Power Instantaneous Loads

The instantaneous power of X-ray machine exposure is very high.

For example: 50kW X-ray machine:
During exposure: 150kV × 333mA ≈ 50kW
Although the duration is only tens of milliseconds, the instantaneous current surge during startup is significant.

If the hospital's power grid capacity is insufficient:

Potential issues include:
Voltage sag
Equipment restart
Exposure failure. Voltage regulators can buffer these fluctuations.

5. Poor power grid quality in some countries

Hospitals in the following regions often install voltage regulators:

Some African countries
Some parts of South America
Some parts of Southeast Asia
Hospitals in remote areas

Because:
Large power grid fluctuations
Frequent power outages
Long power line distances
